Upcycled art from old parts

Gaionomy loves this idea. We’ve been recycling product packaging into notecards and sketch pads for the past several months, great for brainstorming and doodling. Just disassemble and use the blank inside surface for writing, see sample below.

Modern Family, fave show

I swore I’d give up ABC when they pulled the plug on Pushing Daisies. But how can I stay mad when they’ve offered Modern Family instead?

This show brings it with excellent comic timing and skillful camera shots. I watch it twice and experience full belly laughs each time, layers of humor tucked into the twenty-something minutes aired.

For a personal take, Kristi Turnquist of The Oregonian interviews Ty Burrell who plays Phil, realtor and the family goofball.

Water on the moon

moon_face_nightNASA had it’s big break in the astrobiology realm last month with the discovery of gallons of water on the surface of the moon, coughed up when lunar probe LCROSS, Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, slammed into the surface of the dark side of the moon, where craters (and things inside them) never see sunlight.

What could this mean to the future of humanity’s foray into space? William Marshall draws a picture of a lunar living that brings hope for generations of galactic dreamers who still dream of parking a hovercraft in the garage.

Theoretical physicist Michio Kaku explores the more practical, and pressing, implications of the discovery, including evidence that President Barack Obama must weigh as he sets a course for the future of space exploration.

Plug-free electricity? Shocking!

WiTricity Wireless Electricity

WiTricity Wireless Electricity

Imagine powering up without the plugging in. Or traveling abroad without packing power cords and converters. If technology innovator WiTricity can move from prototype to production, wireless electric power is within our reach.

Their website portends a future where electric vehicles that can even recharge themselves without plugging into the grid.

So how is this possible? According to WiTricity’s corporate website, electricity is delivered via magnetic resonance rather than wires, and the technology has applications in almost every imaginable economic sector.

Edible pop bottles?

Well, not quite.

But according to an article on Natural Home Magazine’s website, Coca Cola is unveiling a new bottle made from 30% plant-based materials. The move reduces carbon emissions by 25% and produces material that can be recycled with current plastics without contaminating the end result.

The company is also installing nearly 1,800 new climate-friendly Coca-Cola coolers across the US and Canada this year, employing a natural refrigerant gas and HFC-Free insulation while eliminating 99 percent of direct green house gas emissions.

The new material is derived from sugar cane and molasses. Perhaps Coca Cola will take it one step further and swap the high-fructose corn syrup in the soda with a low glycemic index ingredient, like agave nectar.

Because occasionally, I do like a Coke and a smile. :)
